Who Is Eligible?

How To Apply

You cannot apply for this scholarship program directly. You’d have to be nominated by a Truman Scholarship Faculty Representative from your college or university. Each higher institution is allowed to nominate only four students. Also, four-year colleges and universities can nominate three transfer students from two-year colleges.

Documentation Needed

When applying for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, you will typically need the following documents:

  • Official or unofficial transcripts from all the colleges and universities you have attended

What Happens Next?

Based on the application review, a group of finalists will be selected. The acceptance rate can vary yearly but typically ranges from 150 to 200 individuals

As a finalist, you will be invited to participate in an interview conducted by a regional review panel. The panel comprises distinguished professionals from various fields related to public service. The interview allows the panel to assess your character, potential, and suitability for the Truman Scholarship.

After the interviews, the regional review panels make recommendations for scholarship recipients. The Truman Scholarship Foundation’s Board of Trustees then reviews and approves these recommendations.

Once selected as a Truman Scholar, you will be invited to attend a national orientation program. This program serves as an introduction to the Truman Scholarship community, provides networking opportunities, and offers valuable insights into the responsibilities and expectations associated with the scholarship.

As a Truman Scholar, you will receive a financial award ($30,000) to support your graduate education. Additionally, you will gain access to a network of Truman Scholars, mentors, and policymakers.
